Discussion of appropriate moderation of /r/web_design/

I am of the belief that unless it is obvious spam (such as a poster who only submits links to their own blog, filled with sales pitches to buy their 'make millions with these super secret SEO tricks' book), posts should be left for the community to manage. Generally the voting system works well at pushing the crappy posts down. And if we think we need assistance from a mod, there's always the report button...

My two bits: I enjoy the asking for help, and also people sharing comps and seeking insight. I could look through these all day.

Also good are articles/essays written by users with experiences they've had or helpful tools that they are using.

It would also be really helpful if people used the report link. A lot of times I find submissions that are clearly spam with lots of comments to that effect, but only 1 or 2 people submitted the report link. That's really the only way for us to be notified promptly of spam.

I personally hate the "2001 jQuery Slideshow Plugins" links, but I just don't go to them.

Other than that, no complaints.

My 2 cents: Moderators should only be stepping in to discipline egregious behaviour. That said, this is a community. And if we're going to have specific expectations regarding transgressions that are considered spam offences, then those expectations need to be clearly defined and listed.

I don't see anything wrong with self-promotion. It may be a community faux pas, but I question whether or not it's a punishable offence.

And if we're going to have expectations regarding the quantity or frequency of posts, specifically self-promotional ones, then spell that out, too. What's the magic number?

I don't see how you enforce community participation as a perquisite for posting, as some suggest, but if it is, say so.

What we can't do is hold people accountable for breaking unwritten, unenforceable, and arbitrary rules. I'm reminded of the Onion headline "Area Man Passionate Defender Of What He Imagines Constitution To Be".

Report obvious spamming to the moderators. Otherwise, Reddit has both hide and downvote features built in. Use them.

I think you should make a FAQ , a lot of the same questions get asked, something similar to the r/programming FAQ.

Someone earlier made a mathematical formula on lists.

If [N > 3] then {Spam / Trash} else {Possible Good Content}.

N being the Item or List.

For example, Top "10 Php" Teaching sites. 7 CSS Frameworks to use. 15 things on why your design sucks. Etc.

Usually these list link to other website (with Nofollow sometimes), stealing the thunder and glory because it is a simplify list.

I reckon staying fairly hands-off and letting the upvotes and downvotes do their work is the way to go. Obvious spam where someone is submitting from the same site 5 or 6 times a day should obviously be booted into touch but measuring quality of content is somewhat subjective and best left to the subscribers to decide. The report and hide buttons are there for a reason, people need to learn to use them.

Unless a certain article is blatantly spam, i.e. ripped from a reputable source and plastered with ads, why would there be any need to remove it? Isn't the whole point of reddit that the community as a whole decides what they like and don't like? In other words, my humble opinion (at least in the form of what I vote on) should have equal influence to that of a moderator.

Personally I have no need for list posts, they are accessible everywhere, takes 2 seconds to find one. I'd much rather see a focus on high quality content.

Also, posts like "Help me, why isn't ____ working?!" don't belong here in my opinion, this isn't a help "channel".

Are countless posts about "50 ways to draw a vector" of interest to you, should they be left up to individual voting, or are they spam that is cluttering up the reddit?

I don't think posts like this should be removed, leave it up to the community to downvote them.

Would you prefer mods be hands-off, and only deal with the most obvious spam; or be more proactive, and discourage low-quality content?

Leave it up to the community. So far the r/wed_design reddit has been spam free IMHO.

What other problems have you noticed, that should be addressed?

Again IMHO the r/web_design sub reddit is one of the better ones here. I haven't noticed any problems. I'd love to see some polling though to get an idea of what kind of tools, frameworks, etc... that web designers use.

I feel that the mods should interact as little as possible.

Hands off approach, I don't want mods to filter content the way they think it's appropriate. Otherwise it becomes a subreddit by those few mods and not the users who subscribe to the subreddit. Let the votes decide if the content is low quality.
