How has Webkit been failing at one of the most basic web standards for the past 5 years without someone fixing it?

honestbleeps 3 points4 points 4 hours ago[-]

It's posts like this that make me sort of laugh when I keep hearing that HTML5 is going to magically sweep the web off of its feet... and that it'll start replacing Flash everywhere - even in browser-based gaming...

Webkit has 5+ year old bugs. Gecko has 9 year old bugs. IE users haven't upgraded in 10 years... and people seriously think that:

1) All the browser makers will suddenly conform to standards with HTML5/CSS3/Javascript

2) Enough of the user base will upgrade

To that, I say ... "ha!" and then I weep a little... because it'd be nice if those things actually happened...

How to use PHP to create a special key to detect and block spam bot form submissions.

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 4 hours ago[-]

Are most bots really incapable of handling session cookies? I mean, if they're beating CAPTCHA I don't see how this is a significant deterrent... but I am only speculating here...

I use Flash CS4, FlashDevelop, and TextMate. Trying to pick a CS5 suite. Is Flash Builder worth getting?

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 4 hours ago[-]

My coworkers have grown to use intellij idea for any Flash stuff we do, and they seem to like it quite a bit, though there was a bit of a learning curve with project setup.

Prior to that, FlashDevelop was the preferred editor.

Request: Script to mark those who I dislike or have really pissed me off as 'morons' instead of 'friends'

if you like it, you should try what I made after it... reddit enhancement suite

Born of the many SMT requests here: I've made Reddit Enhancement Suite - a compilation of userscripts to enhance Reddit. Works in Firefox (via GreaseMonkey) or Chrome.

honestbleeps [S] 0 points1 point 9 hours ago[-]

Thanks so much for the detailed response. I hate the idea of wrapping the entire thing in an if statement because it just... looks silly... it's less elegant... but if it makes it work for Opera, I'll probably do it.

I appreciate the info and feedback!

Chicago Blackhawks lost money last season - ticket prices to rise an average of 20%

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 17 hours ago[-]

Time for some wild numeric speculation:

Chicago's average ticket price in 2009-10 was $46.80 if the source I found is correct

At most games, attendance was 21,000ish... Let's call it $45/ticket average, for 40 regular season home games (one was in Finland)...

That's a gate take of $37.8 million right there. Not including the playoffs. We'll call it $38 million.

With $58 million in player salaries, and let's just say $10 million more for operations (backoffice staff, etc), let's just round up to $70 million then to run the team for the year.

This basically means that $32 million in profits needed to be made from sponsorships, concessions, souvenirs and whatever other alternative revenue they have...

I'm sure I'm leaving out a bunch of expenses and income, but the general idea is that a salary cap team, even selling out every regular season game, will lose money without concessions, souvenirs, TV revenue, whatever else....

My guess is that some of the profits from sales on stuff like that are going into some sort of holdings company separate from the team. I'm sure the NHL has rules on what can and cannot be kept off the team's books, but I'm also sure that there's got to be money going to "the Blackhawks in general" that isn't counting as income on the team's books.

Basically, it's all a bunch of accounting goofiness, probably for both tax reasons and minimizing how much the NHL takes from the team, too.

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 17 hours ago[-]

I'm guessing that they have holdings companies for various aspects of the business... so, the "team" lost money...

But something like "Chicago Blackhawks Merchandising Holdings, LLC" (or some such, I'm making stuff up here) probably made craptons of money on jerseys, shirts, etc.

Wirtz's alcohol/beverage company surely made tons of money from sales at the UC.

Discussion of appropriate moderation of /r/web_design/

honestbleeps 3 points4 points 17 hours ago[-]

The idea of a separate help subreddit has been discussed before. Here's the problem(s):

1) In this specific type of situation, people just don't notice or follow directions.. the "help me" posts won't stop anyhow unless we move to a hardline moderation system... I'm somewhat forgiving on this one because really, the info on what a subreddit is on the right is rarely noticed/read by anyone - myself included.

2) This subreddit doesn't get a whole boatload of new posts daily anyway...

3) Lots of us don't mind helping out when the questions are reasonable.

If this were a really busy subreddit, and was becoming cluttered with help requests, that'd be a different story in my mind... but there's only a few posts a day here, so it's not like I come to /r/web_design and think to myself "ugh, so much crap to sift through!"...

What Microsoft really said to analysts: Apple you’re kicking our butt

honestbleeps 6 points7 points 19 hours ago[-]

You're wrong about the Mac audience.

Many of them are designers or tech nerds, programmers, etc.

"95%" of people certainly aren't mac buyers.

That "95%" of people are buying Dell or other big name branded PCs, not macs. I'm sure there's a number of non-technical people who buy macs for their simplicity, but I'm pretty sure they're not the majority.

We'll send reddit a newer, trickier version sometime in the not too distant future... we're hearing loud and clear we made it too easy.

We actually had it harder, decided it might be too hard, and made it easier... we overdid it :(

DAE wake up tired every single day?

I was really hoping for / expecting a great novelty account name right after I read this post. You know, something like UnhelpfulAnecdote ... or SillyTangent...

I am disappointed.

DAE wake up tired every single day?

honestbleeps 7 points8 points 20 hours ago[-]

It's not a part of life for everyone.

For me, it's my entire life. I suffer from chronic insomnia, which makes my already poor sleep hygiene (SLEEP hygiene, people! I don't stink! ;-) even worse because I dread the thought of laying awake in bed unable to fall asleep....

I don't even remember what it feels like to wake up refreshed in the morning.

I don't know what it feels like to not feel a fog or a haze for at least a chunk of the day if not all of it.

Unlike the OP, I'm never human again. But I've grown so used to being perpetually tired that I'm able to (for the most part) curb the grouchiness associated with being tired.

I can't remember the last time I went through a full or even most of a day not feeling groggy.

I need a tool that will let me quickly upload an image and give me a URL for it. Know of anything?

You could also try emgur.com ... drop me a msg if you sign up for an invite :-)

this is /r/ipad ... so far as I know, you can't post files as attachments by going to imgur.com.

That's partly why I built emgur.com -- you can just email an image to it, and it posts to imgur and emails you the direct link.

Alternatively, you could use picup to upload to imgur. I actually find it easier to use emgur though.

I really hope we don't see Beach. After what he did in prospects camp, I'd be ashamed to see him in the indian head sweater, to be honest. He's a complete headcase, and does not deserve to be in the NHL.

I'll be at the convention, yeah... training camp fest too! :)

I also hate animated gifs.

Apparently, given the downvotes you've gotten, people here don't understand what a colossal waste of bandwidth GIFs are.

A 5 second gif is usually something like 10x the bandwidth that an equivalent video would be. Plus they look like crap compared to videos, because GIF is good at compressing line art / solid colors, not photographic images.

In conclusion: animated GIF videos suck.

I tried reincluding the lib.. the problem is the lib can't access the DOM so ultimately it doesn't help.

Chrome and Safari support userscripts, but do not support everything that Greasemonkey does... They don't support unsafeWindow in the same exact way, for example.

Opera may have similar issues, but I've never messed with it.

My first attempt at a Grerasemonkey script for Reddit, can someone help me with a problem with it.

if you want tons and tons of code to learn from, you might check out my recently released reddit enhancement suite... :-)

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 1 day ago* [-]

A better way to do this would be to skip jQuery... the reason being it'd then be compatible with Chrome and Safari too... you really don't need Greasemonkey for this at all..

I haven't tested the following yet, but it's probably close...

// get the header element
var header = document.getElementById('sr-header-area')

// set a mouseover event
header.addEventListener('mouseover', function(e) {
    this.style.white-space = normal;
}, true);

// set a mouseout event
header.addEventListener('mouseout', function(e) {
    this.style.white-space = nowrap;
}, true);

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 1 day ago[-]

by "not displaying the original elements first" - do you mean that flicker that happens where you see what was originally on reddit, for a brief second, then your modification updates it?

This is pretty much impossible to get around. Greasemonkey scripts run upon page load (and really need to, so that you can ensure access to the entire DOM)...

This is why there is an App Store approval process.

honestbleeps -2 points-1 points 1 day ago[-]

The app didn't "get your passwords"...

It seems to have not had access to any passwords, with the possible exception of a manually entered voicemail password.

Not the same as the general notion that it "stole your passwords"... Sounds more like it was a phishing scheme more than anything else - and an iPhone app could do that just the same.

This is why there is an App Store approval process.

honestbleeps 2 points3 points 1 day ago[-]

I call bullshit on #1. I've used apps that can access my contact list and I've not been asked.

I've only ever been asked if an app can access my location data.

This is why there is an App Store approval process.

honestbleeps -2 points-1 points 1 day ago[-]

straw man?

how is an example of an application doing something apple doesn't approve of - but getting through the "approval process" anyway - a straw man? it's a PERFECT example.
