Is a 32" 720p LCD TV a good choice for a computer monitor? Do I need 1080p?

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 16 hours ago[-]

A 1080p TV with HDMI instead of VGA will not be terrible... it's not all that different from 1900x1200... I wouldn't do 720p though.

I'm quite happy with how my HTPC looks on my 46" 1080p TV even when I'm browsing the web or poking around the OS. Granted, I'm not sitting on front of it at a desk, but I can't fathom sitting desk-distance from a 32" TV either...

EDIT: I should clarify: it really depends on what you're using the computer for. I can understand hating the pixel density (lack thereof) if you're doing heavy gaming, etc...

You should check out the FAQ - this problem happens because you're using an addon that deletes your localStorage file (also known as "DOM storage" or "HTML5 cookies") every time you start your browser.

The only one I know of that you can specifically set up an exclusion for is BetterPrivacy, but only because I haven't had time to research others... but on the FAQ it explains how to make BetterPrivacy play nice with it.

yep, that explains it perfectly... unfortunately, because Reddit doesn't always mark its HTML elements with an identifiable piece of text, I have to rely on "position", just like you're talking about...

I can't even rely on the text within, because Reddit is available in a bunch of different languages, and I just don't have the time to make special cases for all of those languages, etc... that'd be a colossal amount of work...

Unfortunately I am thinking this might mean RES won't be able to be compatible with WOT. :-\

Yeah, you're right. The developer is an incompetent retarded asshole.

In case you hadn't noticed, the extension is cross browser, which means it's made to work in browsers OTHER than Chrome too. It exists for Firefox, Safari and Opera too.

This makes doing browser-specific features a bit of a pain to maintain across the board.

It's free. If you don't like it, you're entirely welcome not to use it.

Getting into web design and looking for a few questions answered... can /r/web_design help a newbie out?

honestbleeps -1 points0 points 1 day ago[-]

For the love of all that is holy:

Please do not tell people who are new to and just learning web design to learn "html5"... that's the LAST thing they should be doing...

HTML5 is awesome and all, but it's experimental stuff that doesn't work in all browsers (most importantly, the world's most popular browser) and there's NO reason that a raw beginner should be touching it.

They should be learning to write good, semantic, HTML4-compatible markup with clean and efficient CSS, and learn to test it across at least IE and Firefox, and hopefully a webkit browser as well.

HTML5, which is really a misnomer because most people use it as a term to really encompass "HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, and the canvas element", is nothing that a brand new beginner needs to know... in fact I'd argue strongly that they SHOULDN'T know it.. not until they've learned the basics first... because that shit shouldn't be used on a website that you want to be accessible.

Hmm, never seen WOT before. I'll have a look. I don't really understand from looking at the website for that addon why it would interfere, but when I get some more free time I'll try installing it and see what I can find out.

Please see #2 on the faq .. you're probably using BetterPrivacy or a similar addon that's destroying your localStorage.

2 people have answered already, but I'll just throw out there: the (u) means you're not using the latest version - there's an update! :-)

my best recommendation would be to turn off things you don't use - the two most intensive things being the Comment Boxes portion of the Style Tweaks module, and the User Tagger module...

No questions or suggestions, I just want to say thanks!

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

I'm aware of it, they're on TV all the time on the Green channel...

I haven't actually tried it, but I can tell you that you should expect to spend some serious coin! It looks awesome on the TV show though... They're like crazy mad scientists of food.

No questions or suggestions, I just want to say thanks!

Hah, thanks for the offer. :-) There's lots of great microbrews here in Chitown, though I'm more partial to coffee than beer.

Sand Trap - addictive HTML5 Game

honestbleeps 7 points8 points 1 day ago[-]

Not even a little bit addictive in Firefox 3.6.9. Way too slow.

Different story in Chrome - runs better, but still got laggy on the second level...

It's a cool idea, and a cute game, but it's also a demonstration of why HTML5 is a ways off from ever replacing Flash for games... Javascript performance just varies way too much even in modern browsers.

DAE think that the NHL looking into these big contracts is bad for the league?

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

Why it's good in my opinion:

It exposes the NHL for thinking things out as poorly as they have...

The cap is causing problems for a lot of teams, and there are a few things at fault for that: The biggest problem is that teams well below the cap can spend like sailors and totally screw up the free agent market value - making it impossible for teams anywhere near the cap to acquire a big free agent.

Something needs to be looked at with the cap to adjust it... I'm not against a cap, but it has created an ecosystem where teams who are anywhere near the cap are forced to try these ridiculous long contracts they know will never be played out. It's the only way they can sign top talent.

I'm not sure if this would work any better, but on its surface I do like the idea of players being able to renegotiate their contracts if they want to... If players are willing to take a pay cut to stay at home, why shouldn't they be allowed?

Of course, I'm not sure what ripple effects that might have, but my job also isn't NHL commissioner.

No questions or suggestions, I just want to say thanks!

honestbleeps 2 points3 points 1 day ago[-]

Thanks, I really appreciate it! Especially after taking a bit of a beating over it in /r/lounge .. some people .. yeesh...

Some interesting statistics:

  • Nearly 9,000 installs (I haven't been counting upgrades separately from installs, though, so many of these are upgrades, probably a lot less than 9000 RES users)

  • Nearly 6,500 lines of code

  • 2 user contributed modules

  • 19 update releases (will be 20 later today)

  • 164 different versions saved during development

  • and I'm totally RICH! I've gotten 1 donation of $5, for which I am extremely grateful. :-)

Did you happen to download within the first hour or two of the 1.75 release? I fixed a problem really quickly afterward and didn't up the version number, and I'm guessing that's exactly what you're seeing.

1.76 will be out sometime today also, so.. keep your eyes peeled. :-)

I can't figure out what the 'commentBoxShadows' and the 'commentBoxHover' style tweak features do.

honestbleeps 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Yeah, you should see the drop shadows then in comment threads... that's what those options turn on/off... if you change the setting, you do need to refresh the page to see the differennce.

Request: A way to shut off highlighting of comments and links.

turn off the keyboard navigation module if you're not using it. that'll go away :-)

Poor performance with Styling Tweaks -> commentBoxes on

you're probably running BetterPrivacy or some similar addon that is destroying all of your RES preferences whenever you start your browser.

Please see the FAQ for details.

I can't figure out what the 'commentBoxShadows' and the 'commentBoxHover' style tweak features do.

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

It's the inset drop shadows you see on commentBoxes in comments pages...

So, if you turn it off, you see just a single pixel border.. if you see it on, you see a shadow inside there... (this assumes you're using either Firefox or a Webkit browser.. it may not even show the drop shadows on opera, I'm not entirely sure!)...

Same thing for hover... you'll see a different color when you mouse hover over comments...

If commentBoxes is off, by the way, neither of these options are relevant.

I love the new "show images" but I was wondering...

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

This is a tough one.. not difficult to do, but difficult to decide...

I, for example, use "compress link display" in my preferences. I HATE all of that extra image thumbnail crap, etc... so putting an image there is really weird and totally jacks up the flow of how reddit looks in my layout.

In your layout, with that unchecked presumably, it looks more appropriate.

So, I need to figure out a way to make it look decent / not too disruptive in both layouts... I don't think I'm able to detect which layout you're using, although if I can, maybe I can conditionally change how it shows up, too...

Consider it on the todo list to explore. :-)

[Request] Make the single-click opener open the links in background tabs instead of foreground tabs

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 2 days ago* [-]

Here's the problem with this request, and I get it a lot... and I'm REALLY sorry that this is the answer:

It's not really possible to do this across browsers. Singleclick opener can only open two links at once using Javascript.

Browsers do not like Javascript determining whether tabs open in the background or not. They want this to be a user preference, and not something that Javascript can (sometimes maliciously) do.

I could possibly make this work in Chrome - because the Chrome version is an actual Chrome extension and I think I can make that happen... but it would NOT work in Firefox, Safari, or Opera, which really blows.

Now - it's possible that my bit of research on this is not sufficient, and if someone finds a way to prove me wrong, I'm more than happy to add this.. but everything I've found thus far says that this will be impossible unless it's a native extension - which I simply do not have the time or energy to maintain for 4 different browsers :-\

EDIT: If you use Firefox, you can go to about:config and change a setting - but remember, this is GLOBAL, it's not RES specific... You can change browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground to true and then the l+c link will open tabs in the background..

User Tagger - does it need to store so much data?

honestbleeps 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

Sorry, the colorUser option should disable this, but the event listener snuck outside of an if statement.

It's in there because users requested it... they like the idea that over time, if they keep voting someone up or down, they see them highlighted somehow...

I'll make it so that when you disable colorUser, it stops tracking your upvote/downvote clicks.
